Hi! My name is Malique. I have been creating art since I was in diapers, like many kids my first canvas were the white walls in our house. As I grew, so did my practice and experimentation. I was always captivated by photographers and their photography, and I began my personal journey in photography in 2016. I initially began photographing subjects to be reference photos for my paintings and it quickly took off into where we are today, an extension of my passion to create.
I am pursuing my BFA in Photography at Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. I have always wanted to go to school for art to have a more direct technical learning and understanding of the crafts I practice. Here I have been fortunate enough to learn the technical skills I have sought after, and expanding on my conceptual ideas as well as experimenting with subject matter to photograph. My primary subject of choice is to capture motion. Whether it be in dance, sports, nature; I want to pause the moment of movement to be appreciated for longer than the split second in reality that it lives.
I hope goal with my photography is to capture moments that bring excitement to everyone who is able to see it, and if possible, captivate them for just a moment.
SANCTUARY
In June of 2012 my life forever changed, my older brother, Girona Lydell Pye II, passed away in a swimming accident at the Chattahoochee River with friends. It is a grief I have carried with me since. I am still understanding how to process my feelings around it, and working towards representing everything I feel from it. For several years after this incident I was unable to be near a body of water. I am not sure what changed or when, but while I was living in Jacksonville, fl I found myself again at peace at the water. Exploring freely and having a sense of safety. Sanctuary is the representation of my associations with water being my place of escape and grounding.
